Three kinds of silver. The honest truth about each one — and why we chose the one that's built to be worn.

Most people think sterling silver is the cheap way to sell silver — silver with something stretched into it to cut the cost. That's backwards. The copper in sterling isn't a corner cut; it's an engineering decision — the same logic that turns soft 24k gold into wearable 14k and 18k. Pure silver is too soft to survive a ring shank or a chain you actually wear. Sterling is what silver becomes when you build it to last.

The three metals

Fine Silver
.999 — pure
The purest silver. Also the softest.
The pros
  • The least reactive of the three — almost no copper, so it tarnishes far slower than sterling (though no silver is truly tarnish-proof).
  • The most reflective, brightest metal there is — and being pure, none of sterling's faint warm cast.
  • The most hypoallergenic form of silver — ~99.9% pure, and nickel-free.
The cons
  • Soft enough to dent with a fingernail (~30 HV vs sterling's ~75).
  • Bends, scratches, and loses shape with daily wear — shanks go out of round, links deform.
  • Takes a work-hardening, but only weakly — even hardened it stays softer than annealed sterling, and the heat of any solder or repair anneals it soft again.
Best forEarrings, pendants, and pieces that hang without taking impact — and the most severe metal sensitivities.

The pros
  • Durability is the whole point — its 7.5% alloy (traditionally copper) makes it ~2.5× harder than pure silver, with only the faintest extra warmth in the white.
  • Genuinely substantial: at 10.36 g/cm³, a solid chain or signet has real weight in the hand.
  • Solid all the way through — no plating to wear out; polish, resize, and re-polish for a lifetime.
  • The centuries-old standard for wearable silver — the whole repair and hallmark world is built on .925.
The cons
  • It tarnishes — silver reacts with sulfur in the air to form a dark film, and the copper makes it happen faster. Wipes back to bright with a polishing cloth: routine care, not damage.
  • On some wearers, copper can leave a green mark — a sweat-and-humidity issue, not a quality one.
  • Durable for silver, not indestructible — it'll show honest wear over years.

Argentium
935 & 960
Modern sterling — germanium swapped in for some copper.
The pros
  • Far better tarnish resistance — germanium forms a clear, self-healing layer (~7–8× standard sterling).
  • A brighter, whiter color with no copper cast — and it stays that way.
  • Firescale-free and nickel-free — strong for skin-contact pieces and sensitive wearers.
  • Still real, solid silver (93.5–96%), from recycled, traceable stock.
The cons
  • Costs more — more silver, plus germanium, plus a controlled brand alloy.
  • A specialty alloy with limited finished-goods availability.
  • Tarnish-resistant, not tarnish-proof — slowed dramatically, not stopped forever.
Best forA premium, stay-white, low-maintenance tier — and wearers who want solid metal, not plate, with the least upkeep.

The myth, busted

Sterling isn't watered-down silver. It's silver built to be worn.

The claim we hear most: sterling is just a cheaper way to sell silver — water it down with copper, charge less, move on. It's wrong, and the metallurgy says so plainly.

Pure silver is too soft for anything you put through daily life. A signet face scratches. A ring shank bends out of round. A chain stretches and its links deform. So you alloy it — about 7.5% copper, the answer centuries of silversmiths landed on. The copper forms tiny hard particles scattered through the silver, and working the metal stiffens it further, so the finished piece ends up roughly two and a half times harder than pure silver — with only the faintest shift in its white.

It's the same move that turns 24k gold — too soft to wear — into the 14k and 18k that holds up on your hand. Nobody calls 18k gold "watered down." Sterling earns the same respect. It's still 92.5% silver. The other 7.5% is what makes it wearable.

Where we stand

Solid sterling, nothing plated

We stick to solid sterling silver — .925 — because it's the right metal for the pieces we sell. Men's chains and signet rings have to hold their shape, hold their detail, and take whatever a real day throws at them. Sterling does that. Fine silver doesn't — it's too soft for a shank or a link, which is exactly why you won't find it in these pieces from us. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something pretty that bends.

Argentium is the honest premium upgrade, and where it makes sense we'll say so — but we won't list it until we can actually ship it. Right now, what we ship is solid sterling.

Real metal, real weight, nothing plated.

It's solid the whole way through — no plating to wear out, no base-metal core under a thin bright shine. The weight you feel is the silver itself, and it'll still be silver after years of wear: ready to polish back to bright, or earn the patina you've put into it.
